Why we choose granite benchtops over stainless steel countertops

If you're looking for new kitchen benchtops, you might be invited to use one of the less broadly used materials, such as stainless steel. It might be easy to become fascinated by such an option, but there's more than one reason why granite remains the most practical choice.

Here are some reasons why we choose granite countertops instead of opting for stainless steel.

1. Harder to Scratch or Dent

Stainless steel is a very hard material, so it's not like you're ever going to crack right through it. However, stainless steel benchtops will take scratches more easily, which is a bit of difficulty when you're going to be using knives and other sharp things around them.

Stainless steel can also be scratched quite easily, and any scratches that are made will be easy to see. But Granite is hard to scratch, and it won't dent. If you do happen to drop something heavier and create a chip, that chip won't be very visible.

2. Easy to Keep Looking Clean

Both granite and stainless steel can be cleaned easily. However, you're probably going to find yourself cleaning your stainless steel benchtops regularly. One of the difficulties with stainless steel is that it is quite reflective and light, meaning that any crumbs or dust are going to show up very easily across the surface. Even a couple of fingerprints can be seen from across the room, so the struggle to keep your stainless steel benchtops looking sharp will be a constant one. Granite is darker, less reflective, and doesn't show smudges nearly as easily.

3. Warmer Appearance

Stainless steel usually sounds like a very cool and modern material. The problem is that it regularly ends up feeling a little cold and artificial. Since most kitchens are the social hub of a home as well as a place in which you cook food, it often strikes a more pleasant note to use a material like granite, which gives a homelier and more welcoming look.

4. Less Noise

Granite benchtops aren't quite as good at suppressing noise as those made from laminate or butcher block, but they aren't nearly as noisy as benchtops made from stainless steel. Even dropping something as small and light as a fork can make a loud clanging noise that you'll be able to hear right across the house.
